RPYC

Sailing Division

Adults Learn to sail course starts 18th April 2010.

The RPYC Sailing Division runs active racing, training and social events for sailors across a range of age groups and fleets of mixed yachts, trailer sailers, Hobie 16, Lasers and Optimists. It is governed by a committee of volunteers and fleet representatives (also volunteers) ably aided by RPYC staff.

The Sailing Season opens officially on the first weekend after Easter and finishes in late November. This is the windy season in Port Moresby when the south easterly trade winds settle in. A presentation night is held at the end of the season to present series, championship and club awards and trophies.

Each fleet has its own programme of seasonal events. These include shorter races during (generally) milder conditions for Trailer Sailor and Small Yachts (TSSY); 2-3 hr and 5 or so hr races in (again, generally) windier conditions and short off shore races for A Class; harbour races and some longer inshore races for Hobies and harbour races for the Laser and Optimist fleets.

In addition each year the RPYC hosts a number of regattas that are open to boats of every fleet. These events usually comprise a number of back to back races and sometimes run over 2 days.

The RPYC Junior Fleet actively promotes sailing to youth and has a special relationship with the Bootless Bay Sailing School offering cadetships for young Papua New Guinean sailors. PNG regularly sends teams to international events and is a successful international campaigner on the sailing circuit.

Training in how to sail is available for adults and children alike with adults also able to undertake navigation training. Specialist training (eg radio use; first aid; train the trainer) is provided from time to time depending on demand.

The RPYC, like many Clubs, maintains the tradition of WAGS: Wednesday Afternoon Gentle Sailing. If you like the idea of a gentle cruise around Fairfax Harbour (Port Moresby) at sunset, turn up to the wet bar at 1730hrs with what you want to drink and hop on board one of the boats heading out.
